What is a visual identity, and how it differs from a logo

Aggelos Kourtidis1 min read

The logo is one signature. The identity is the whole language: typography, colour, materials, photography and usage rules.

Many clients come to me for a logo and end up with a full identity, because the logo is only the beginning. It is the signature; the identity is the whole language your business speaks.

An identity includes typography (which letters, at what weight and size), the colour palette, the way photographs are taken, textures and patterns, and usage rules: what is allowed, what is not, at what spacing and on which backgrounds. Without rules, every partner and every print shop uses your image as they like, and within two years the image fades.

The value shows in the details: the same colour on the storefront, the menu and Instagram; the same typeface on the business card and the website; the same feeling in the package and the Google review. That consistency is what makes a business look serious, and trustworthy.

If your business image has been built piece by piece at different times, reorganising the identity usually costs less than you expect. Tell me what you already have, I start from there.
